Did Summer Vacation Impact Your Driver’s License?

Replace a License Online and Drive on the Receipt

If you survived summer vacation, but your driver’s license or identification card did not, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) offers a quick and secure online option for obtaining a replacement at www.dds.ga.gov.

DDS Commissioner Rob Mikell also reminds customers that a recent law change enables customers to immediately drive on the online receipt until the license arrives by mail within fourteen days.

“Replacing a lost license using DDS Online Services is a common sense solution which will save customers valuable time and money,” said Commissioner Mikell.  “Legally driving on the Online Services receipt eliminates any reason to visit in person for this service.”

Data from May 2014 shows that DDS issued 27,000 replacement licenses and ID cards for customers.  Of that number, only 3,850 were done online.  DDS attributes that to the previous state requirement of having a driver’s license in the driver’s immediate possession while operating a motor vehicle.  Being able to drive on the online receipt until the updated license is received should provide customers a stronger level of confidence in using DDS Online Services.  Plus, online renewal also has the added benefits of saving gasoline and absences from work and/or school.

In addition to replacing a lost or stolen license/ID, there are new reinstatement services also offered online.

Customers may get complete information (including court and citation information) about a license suspension and check the requirements to reinstate all in one place.  Fees can be paid, driving privileges reinstated and a new license ordered at the convenience of home or office twenty four hours a day.
